Mild winds out of the southeast provided just enough breeze and headwind to take the edge off an 85 degree day with 95 percent humidity. The heat and lack of breeze has been heating things up for the last couple of days (we have used the air conditioning for last two nights). It was a much more pleasant ride than the trip into the Keys. The water was clear, and I got to look at the scenery a lot more because I wasn't riding as low as I was with 30 mph wind. I didn't see any big fish as was riding over the bridges, but I did see one cormorant, a type of duck, swimming under water, searching for food.
The shoulder, road, and bike paths in Islamorada and Largo are absolutely TERRIBLE. FromSugarloaf towards Key West, the path is newer, and a lot of it is under construction, but it will be nice someday. The path out of the Keys is old and in need of replacement and redesign. The root swells from the mature trees under the old asphalt just beats your tires, wrists, and rear end. Travel is slow for this reason. The shoulder is torn up, and there are many more places for vehicles to turn in front of you than there were on the other side. The trail CROSSES Rt 1 twice with no signage for traffic, and they want you to get off your bike andWALK across the road. Like that's gonna happen!
Overall, I enjoyed the ride however, even though it meant heading north... But I think I'm am just happy to be on the road again.
