For quite a while now, Pam has been wanting to see a manatee. We finally saw one in the harbor, in the calm, warmer water, near where we were to board a boat for a ride in the Florida Bay. When we first saw it, it looked like a big smooth rock in the water. Then it dove, and we saw its snout, come up for air only a few more times.
They are so homely that they are cute!
We took a hour and a half ride in the bay on a day that was the choppiest of the year, according to the captain. We saw the rare white pelican, many of them actually, on a sand bar, and also got a glimpse of a dolphin. The choppy water and wind kept the wildlife down, and cut our trip short, but it was worth it. We then listened to a ranger program about sharks. Later in the evening, we attended a star gazing lecture that was absolutely painful to both Pam and I. It was cool when the ranger was pointing out stars with a laser pointer, but the discussions that followed were like watching paint dry. The mosquitoes only added to the ambiance of the starlit night.
