Kingman Classic Car Weekend and the Sand Drags May 4 & 5

May 4 and 5 ----We hit the biggest weekend of the year in Kingman, as there were hundreds, if not a thousand classic cars and souped up hot rods all over the streets of town on Saturday afternoon. They closed Route 66, and put a big sign over the road for every car in the show to have its picture taken as it entered the show area. There was 50's and 60's music coming out of speakers all over town, and I have never seen so many GTO's, Road Runners, Chargers, Barracuda's, Mustangs, Cameros, 55 Chevies, and Studebakers. If there is a car show with better cars, at a better venue, I'd like to know where it is. All of that, plus the beautiful mountains, great weather, and never ending train traffic made for a memorable day.

Classic car show on Route 66

Cars were parked along the sides of the road for blocks!

This one had a cool paint job - look carefully!

Mike got "hooked" by this tow truck!

For those of you with young kids or grand kids,  you will recognize this tow truck!  He was in the movie "Cars" which is sort of based on route 66.

It even had the tumbleweed!

Sunday was a day for clouds, wind, dust, and drag strip racing by all the local rednecks at the Kingman Sand Drags. We drove to the outskirts of town, then about four miles on a gravel road before we found this not-so-famous venue. There were some badass vehicles there, just not as many as I had hoped. We got some good video, but soon had to watch from inside the Jeep as the wind kicked up and the dust and dirt became too intolerable. None of the others seemed to mind the dust in their Bud Lites though, as it is just part of living in Kingman.

Video of one of the drag races on the sand
As you can see, the races are on the sand flats with the mountains in the background.

Start of drag race.  Notice the truck in the background hauling out some of the race vehicles.

Mike thinks this looks like his old mulch trucks!!
